Did you know...? The Irish Flag

There are two different versions about the meaning of the colours of the Irish flag: the official one and the not that official one.

The official meaning of the three colours makes reference to the history of Ireland, and more specifically, to the political and religious problems that Ireland had in the past. The Irish flag is green, white and orange. The green color on the flag represents the native people of Ireland (most of whom are Roman Catholic). The orange color represents the British supporters of William of Orange who settled in Northern Ireland in the 17th century (most of whom are Protestant). The white in the center of the flag represents peace between these two groups of people.

However, the non-official meaning of the Irish flag is much more funnier and interesting. Irish people say that the orange makes reference to the colour of the hair of most Irish. The green stands for the landscape of Ireland. And the white can be related to the most typical food of this country: the potato.
